Final Score: Heacham 0-5 Thetford Town
Thetford Town travelled up to the north western corner of Norfolk to face Heacham on the coast for a mid-week evening fixture, a fair old trek. Having lost away to Brantham on the weekend they would be looking at bottom-of-the-table Heacham to recover some points. Heacham have taken a few heavy defeats this season so far, with a goal difference of -18 after only 6 games, however, last season Thetford Town slipped up away at the then bottom side Cornard United, at a crucial point of the season, so will be only too aware of this potential banana skin. Big performances on the coast were the order of the day.
On the way into the ground I picked up a nice full colour programme for £2 then headed to the bar for a cold drink on this warm, mild evening. The floodlights were on early as the sun was setting and seemed to attract a swarm of large mosquitos which were a constant nuisance. The teams lined up in the corner with Heacham in their black and white stripes with Thetford Town in their away mint green kits.
KEY MOMENTS
HE = Heacham
TT = Thetford Town
4' - TT - Harvey Lott and Olpin with nice play in the left corner, ball is whipped into the box by Olpin and Diggens rises high, but his header is too close to Pishorn for the save.
11' - TT - Cooper bursts forwards at pace and into the box, he fires in a low daisy cutter of a strike, it is spilled by Pishorn but he is able to regather the ball just before Diggens gets a toe in.
14' - TT - Kirk and Diggens linking up brilliantly down the right, a 1-2 sees Diggens on the edge of the box, he takes it in and lashes in an effort that has Pishorn beaten, but the ball smashes into the post and out to Ward whose follow-up from 20yrds out is pulled wide.
15' - TT - Grove and Buttle with some sublime play down the left, the well-worked move sees Buttle drive in and try and curl an effort round Pishorn using the outside of his left-boot, but the ball scoots just wide of the far-post.
18' - TT - Captain Sam Bond in an advanced position plays a nice give-and-go with Buttle, the ball is fizzed across the danger area, Harvey Lott looks in but is an inch or so off making contact for a sure-fire opener, Thetford knocking at the gates big time.
19' - TT - Olpin with a floated cross in from the right, Elliot Smith is in at the far-post but as keeper Pishorn competes the ball comes off the back of his head and just wide.
26' - TT - GOAL (0-1) - Thetford finally bag the deserved opener, Diggens down the right, he skins the last defender and squares the ball across the box for Buttle to tap-in at the far-post, it had been coming.
29' - TT - GOAL (0-2) - Thetford with a quick 2nd, this time it is Kirk who storms down the right, ball is squared in, the ball it tipped into Diggens, the ball gets tangled in between his feet but he stays composed to eventually slot the ball into the net beyond the rooted Pishorn.
37' - TT - GOAL (0-3) - An Olpin corner from the right is delivered with precision and a towering bullet header from Elliot Smith sees the ball almost burst the net, have it!
41' - TT - GOAL (0-4) - Kirk with the ball at his feet on the edge of the box, he drops his shoulder, opens up the angle and slots the ball into the net with ruthless ease, excellent finish to give Thetford a 4-goal cushion.
50' - TT - A perfectly weighted through-ball sets Diggens in, he powers in a strike at the near-post, forcing Pishorn to make a good stop.
59' - TT - Kirk played in and unleashes a powerful left-footed effort crashing into the wrong side of the side-netting, close!
60' - HE - Heacham's best chance of the game so far, from a corner a close range header is saved by the outstretched fingers tips of Sutton to deny the player, and the ball is cleared, credit to them to keep plugging away, got very close with that one.
62' - TT - Substitute King with a low driven ball into the danger, there is a mad goalmouth scramble but somehow Heacham clear their lines in the chaos.
69' - TT - GOAL (0-5) - Thetford hit five, Kirk again finds Diggens in the box and he pokes the ball into the net, he made that finish look easy!
The game fizzles out by the end, with Thetford Town bringing on all 5 substitutes before Sam Bond has to be taken off, meaning they play the final 15 minutes with 10-men. Despite this they create a few half-chances and are able to defend their clean sheet with relative ease. All-in-all a fine performance from Thetford Town, a blistering first 45 doing the damage, the front 3 of Kirk, Diggens and Buttle were attacking at will in waves, backed up by Cooper and Grove coming in from deep, with Olpin and Harvey Lott pulling the strings from the middle. The defence and centre of the park was secured by fine physical performances from Ward, Elliot Smith and Bondy, there was no way through for Heacham today. In the end it was a comprehensive win in what could have been a potential banana skin of a game, and once the first goal went in the floodgates opened. All credit to Heacham however, they kept plugging away and never gave up, and done well in the 2nd half to limit the scoreline. For Thetford Town, current table toppers Stowmarket Town make a trip to Mundford Road, a big chance for The Brecklanders to show their credentials, see you all there, UP THE TOWN!!!
