With Thetford Town on their travels this afternoon I took the opportunity to take in some Anglian Combination football, the initial plan was to head over to The Glebe to watch Mundford. However, with FC Steamers unable to field a team I looked around for an alternative, and as Rockland United had been on my 'to-visit' list for a while I made the short trip over. Rockland United are in the Anglian Combination D4 South and have had a good start since promotion from the Central & South Norfolk league last season. This game however was a Norfolk Junior Cup game against Eaton United, who sit in the top division of the Central & South Norfolk league, one tier below Rockland United, and are also going well in their league, so a good match-up.
Rockland United have a great little set-up for their level complete with a club house with a bar and hot drinks as well as a lovely little stand with two new dugouts either side under construction.

The stand was much needed this afternoon as the weather cycled between sunlight to dark skies, rain showers and blowing winds. The teams can out in to a fine shower, with Rockland United in red and black stripes, with Eaton United in a yellow and black kit.
KEY MOMENTS
RU = Rockland United
EU = Eaton United
11' - RU - GOAL (1-0) - A ball over the top, the Rockland No.6 sprints onto it, the keeper rushes to the edge of the box and on the bounce the 6 gets to it first, his touch drops past the keeper and kindly for him so he sweeps the ball into the wide open net, great start for the visitors.
13' - EU - A speculative ball is punted up field, the clearance is hashed and the ball spins towards goal, the Eaton No.9 latches onto it and is 1-on-1, the Rockland keeper charges out of his box and makes a challenge with his feet to deny Eaton the chance, great goalkeeping somewhat surprising the Eaton forward with how quick and how far he was willing to come out.
18' - EU - A crossed ball drops to the Eaton No.6 on the far-side, a snap half-volley is hit sweetly, the connection is perfect, I'm expecting to see the net bulge but the Rockland keeper makes a phenomenal diving save and the defenders clear their lines!
26' - RU - The Rockland No.4 chases down a deflected ball along the right flank, he squares across the box and the No.6 is sliding in at the far post, but is mere inches away from connecting, so close!
29' - EU - Eaton have a free-kick close to the half way line, the Eaton captain, No.23, launches the ball into the box, the No.8 looks to be on the end of it but the ball skims past his head.
36' - RU - A free-kick ball is pumped into the box, the ball is not fully cleared and it drops to the Rockland No.10, unchallenged he heads towards goal, it is heading in but the effort is cleared off the line, this is why you bodies on the line during a set-piece.
45' - RU - Ball played into the No.6, he turns and sprints forwards, skipping past two Eaton defenders, before lashing the ball across the goal and into the inside of the net for a fine finish. However, the referee calls a foul for a suspected hand-ball in the build-up, a real shame as that was a fine individual goal.
48' - RU - GOAL (2-0) - Rockland come out of the blocks hot and grab a decisive 2nd goal early on. A cross from the left from the No.10 is nodded down by the No.6 into the No.4 who from the edge of the box drills his effort into the bottom left corner beyond the diving keeper, accurate finish!
62' - RU - GOAL (3-0) - A corner ball is curled into the near-post, a defender tries to head it clear but gets it all wrong and flicks it into the net, game over now it feels.
69' - EU - The Eaton captain with a good ball whipped in from the right, the No.6 receives it on the far side, but flashes his cross goal effort wide.
83' - EU - The Eaton No.17 wins a free-kick on the edge of the box. The 9 steps up to take it, his low effort is guided past the wall and towards the bottom left corner, but the Rockland keeper gets down to make a diving save to maintain that clean sheet.
A closer game than the score suggested, Eaton United had their moments, particularly in the first-half, but Rockland United's clinical finishing and fine saves from their keeper made this a more comfortable win that it could have been. After the 3rd goal went in they used their substitutions and began to cruise for the remainder of the game, but still battled fiercely at the back to secure their clean-sheet. The big concern for Rockland United was their star man, the No.6, going off injured with a possible broken arm. I did not see the incident that caused this, but I hope the diagnosis is not as bad as feared and that he has a quick recovery. The win sees Rockland United into the 3rd Round of the Norfolk Junior Cup, and I hope they go on to have a good run. I also wish Eaton United best of luck with the rest of their season. I hope to return to Rockland United one day, was a nice place to visit not too far from home, and it was good to see them bag the victory, all the best.
