Final Score: Stowmarket Town 1-2 Thetford Town
Following last weeks draw, Thetford Town's promotion hopes are slimmer than ever, but at least the aim is simple, four games to go, with nothing less than four wins needed to give us a good shot of making play-offs, as so many of our near rivals have lots of games in hand on us. Last week we went 2-0 up and had chances to put the game to bed, but allowed Stowmarket back into the game seeing us drop another two-points. Today we needed to be more clinical if we wish to take all of the points on offer today.
Upon arrival at Greens Meadow, sadly no printed matchday programme was on offer, the only downside to what is an otherwise great venue to visit as an away fan.
It was a gloriously sunny day, so warm that the jacket came off, the Thetford fans all basking in the sun. The pitch looked decent, but there were a few bobbles that became apparent during play. Under the azure blue skies, Stowmarket Town lined up in their home yellow and black colours, with Thetford Town in their claret & blue.
KEY MOMENTS
ST = Stowmarket Town
TT = Thetford Town
6' - TT - GOAL (0-1) - Thetford with an early opener, a neat ball down the right, Harvey Lott spins his man, out-muscles him and is bearing through on goal, seeing Diggens completely open and coming in off the left, he squares the ball across and Diggens slots the ball into the wide open net, perfect start!
26' - TT - Captain Sam Bond with a deft ball over the backline, Diggens beats the offside trap and is on the ball, he is to the right of the goal and fires across the keeper, the effort looks to be heading in but crashes into the post and out, so close!
36' - ST - Grabowski with the ball to the right of the area, through a packed box he drills in a cross-goal effort, it somehow evades everyone and goes wide for a goal-kick.
45'+1' - ST - GOAL (1-1) - Just before the break the hosts equalise, and deservedly so after a decent spell of pressure. The goal is courtesy of Gordon-Clement, a brilliant individual goal seeing him battling Elliot Smith and coming out on-top, a rare feat, he then cuts across the edge of the box and fires in a powerful strike that nestles into the thin gap between Pride and the post, great goal it has to be said.
49' - ST - The hosts with an early chance, Simmons gets half a yard on the Thetford defender down the right flank, he squares the ball across the box, Jake Wharton-Richardson is in the middle and only millimetres away from connecting!
53' - TT - Diggens latches onto the end of a long ball down the left, seeing Beresford flying out he tries to chip him, but there is not quite enough height on it and the keeper manages to get a hand on it!
57' - ST - RED CARD - Jake Wharton-Richardson receives a straight red for a bad challenge on Thetford Town captain Sam Bond, his boot connecting with his thigh. Bondy is down for a while receiving treatment but is able to play-on. Advantage to Thetford Town.
65' - TT - Following a corner the ball drops to Diggens on the far-side of the goal, his well-struck effort looks good, but blocked by some last-ditch defending.
69' - ST - A swift counter-attack by Stowmarket down the left, Grabowski beats the defenders, takes the ball to just inside the box and fires in an effort at the near-post, Pride able to get a leg on it to make the stop.
71' - ST - Stowmarket again, a poor ball out is intercepted, substitute Jordan-Smith with a powerful effort from the edge of the box, but Pride is equal to it.
82' - ST - It certainly does not feel like Stowmarket are down to 10 as they carve out another solid chance, a free-kick is pumped in, captain Langridge with a free-header, it somewhat takes him by surprise and his effort is flicked wide.
90' - TT - Within 10 seconds of coming on, substitute Piggott receives the ball in a central position from a break down the left, he shoots and the effort is saved by Beresford who had closed down the space and Thetford win a corner. Nearly an immediate impact from the youngster.
91' - TT - GOAL (1-2) - The corner ball is whipped in, and Thetford Town fan favourite Elliot Smith rises high to hit a bullet header into the top left corner, you don't save those! The Thetford fans and the ultras all go wild, this could prove to be a very important goal!
96' - TT - Substitute Ebanks-Blake with the chance to seal all 3-points, he is through on goal and takes it almost past the keeper, rolling the ball towards goal from a narrow angle it creeps painfully wide, unlucky!
The three-points from Thetford Town keep the glimmer of play-off hope alive, but boy did they leave it late against a pumped up 10-man Stowmarket Town. Thetford started well rewarded by an early goal, but as the half progressed they became pinned in and Stowmarket got their deserved equaliser. The 2nd half was finely poised until a reckless challenge saw the hosts drop down to 10-men, but this seems to gee them up, where Thetford laboured to make chances Stowmarket were hot on the counter, Grabowski and Gordon-Clement the main outlets. Thankfully Pride held strong and once the reinforcements from the bench were on, Thetford began to get more of the play, with King, Ebanks-Blake and Piggott all making a strong impact. But, it was a Thetford Town legend whose bullet header sealed the win, Elliot Smith take a bow!! The three-points could prove vital, with Great Yarmouth Town, Soham Town Rangers and Haverhill Rovers all losing it isn't over yet. Thetford get a rest of just over 2 weeks to the next one as they host a free-scoring Haverhill Rovers, it is set-up to be a big one on Bank Holiday Monday, let's get a huge crowd down and back the boys, UP THE TOWN!!!
