With no local games of interest for me, I opted to stay on late at work to allow me to take in some Cambridgeshire County football, as these Tuesday night kick-offs will surely be ending soon as the nights draw in ever more quickly. The Foxton game was calling me the loudest, being fairly close, a Premier Division game, and featuring Sawston United, a newly promoted side and one of the previous clubs of new Thetford Town signing Rhion Davison. I have also just learned that previous Thetford Town goalkeeper Tom Smith, who was between the sticks in the seasons we nearly got promoted into Step 4, used to play for Foxton!
Foxton was a quintessential Cambridgeshire village, and the ground was set in a complex of impressive sporting facilities in the centre of the village, centred around the village hall, including cricket, bowls, tennis, a children's play park and football of course. What's more, there was an impressive church backing onto the field, idyllic scenes.
We had finally had some rain and cooler weather, the evening being much milder and grey, but very much welcomed. It was still warm enough for shorts and t-shirt being in the low 20's, perfect playing conditions. Before long the teams were out onto the pitch, Foxton in red and black stripes with Sawston United in an eye-catching sky blue kit.
KEY MOMENTS
FX = Foxton
SU = Sawston United
19' - SU - The ball drops to the Sawston No.9 inside the box, he hits the ball on the bounce with the outside of his boot, it is struck well and has the Foxton keeper beaten, but it crashes into the underside of the bar and down, but it is the wrong side of the line and flies clear, so close to an impressive opener from the visitors.
21' - SU - A cross into the box from the right flank by the No.9, at the far-post the No.11 looks in but he glances his header wide of the post, looked a sure-fire goal if on target, Sawston with two good chances to go 1-0 up.
49' - FX - Not long after the restart, Foxton craft their best chance of the game, a free-kick on the left-flank is pinged in by the No.10, the Foxton captain leaps the highest but his headed effort skims just over the bar.
50' - SU - Sawston with a swift reply down the right flank, the No.15 squares the ball into the box to find the No.9, he side-foot volleys the ball but it is straight down the throat of the Foxton keeper, either side and the net would have been bulging.
85' - FX - GOAL (1-0) - The game was tending to a 0-0 draw until the 85th minute when a corner taken by the No.8 is curled beautifully into the danger area to find the substitute Leavers whose powerful header punches into the back of the net, nothing as satisfying as a bullet header for a late winner!
92' - FX - Foxton go close to applying a layer gloss on the result, the 14 gets in down the right, strides forwards and lashes in a strike at the near-post, but the effort goes into the wrong-side of the side-netting.
That was a super competitive and tight game, the two teams very evenly matched throughout with clear-cut chances very few and far between. A draw probably would have been a fair result, but the Foxton winner was a piece of pure precision and secured all 3-points for the hosts. Sawston United certainly had their moments and should have gone in at half-time in the lead, it was really unlucky that the shot that hit the crossbar did not fly across the line, but I was inline with that and the officials called that one spot on. Overall a pleasant evening of football in much milder conditions in a serene Cambridgeshire village, not many better ways to spend an evening. I wish both teams every success for the rest of their campaigns.
