With the days getting longer, it is this time of the season that I can catch some Cambridgeshire County League football after work. Being close to work, I decided to check out Sawston Rovers, who play in the 3rd tier of the Cambridgeshire league, and who hosted 2nd place Huntingdon United who could secure promotion with a win.
Sawston Rovers, founded in 1957, is one of at least 3 teams in the town, with Sawston United in the division above, and Cambridge City in their new home in the north end of the town. This was a fairly basic footballing facility, but the playing surface, other than a few undulations, looked fairly decent. It was a mild and grey evening that got colder as the sun set, but good conditions for a game of football, with only a light wind in the air. The teams lined up with Sawston Rovers in an all red kit, with Huntingdon United in an all green kit.
KEY MOMENTS
SR = Sawston Rovers
HU = Huntingdon United
9' - HU - The Huntingdon winger Wills bursts into the box, the ball flicks up into his arm to which the Sawston defenders protest, but the referee indicates play-on, and in the moment of hesitation Tommy Dear is threaded in, but his effort is saved by the outstretched leg of the keeper, very close to an early and controversial opener.
14' - HU - A sustained Huntingdon attack in which they pack-out the box, a ball sent in drops to Tommy Dear just inside the box, he swivels and snaps in a strike that zips narrowly wide of the upright.
18' - HU - A corner curled into the far-post by Tommy Dear, the No.5 centre-back is on the end but his powerful headed effort cannot be kept down and flies over the bar.
25' - HU - GOAL (0-1) - Huntingdon finally score the opener, a long diagonal ball from Scaife releases Wills down the right, he sprints onto the ball and squares it into the box, the keeper grabs the ball but spills it into the path of Tommy Dear who pokes the ball into the net.
44' - HU - GOAL (0-2) - Huntingdon United with the 2nd just before the break, a corner taken by the No.3 makes it way to Scaife on the back post, whilst the connection is not clean there is enough on it to direct the ball beyond the keeper and into the net.
48' - HU - GOAL (0-3) - Not long after the restart and Huntingdon United surely secure the win. and promotion A very slick attacking move culminates with Claxton cutting the ball across the box to find Wills coming in off the right-flank to absolutely drill the ball into the net, fine finish.
65' - HU - Scaife launches a high-ball over the Sawston backline, Claxton is onto it but as the ball bounces it gets caught up in his feet and by the time he connects the keeper is on him and he saves from point-blank range.
68' - HU - Winger Wills on the right cuts into the box and from a tight angle fires across the keeper, it has him beaten but the effort is cleared off the line, Tommy Dear has a second chance from just inside the box and he aims to the bottom right corner, but the keeper is able to get a boot on the ball to keep it out.
75' - SR - RED CARD - The Sawston Rovers No.4, Lewis Cross, is given a second yellow card, did not see any challenges so I think it was for dissent, and he receives his marching orders.
79' - HU - GOAL (0-4) - Huntingdon United put the cherry on top with their fourth. Scaife picks up a loose ball and threads a neat ball through the middle to split the defence, Rickson is onto it like a flash, he takes the ball to the left of the goal and slots in across the tracking keeper.
84' - HU - Huntingdon take a quick free-kick and centre-back Jolly with a foray forwards is played in through the middle, from just inside the box he shoots, but the effort is too close to the keeper and he makes another save with his foot.
That was a convincing win from Huntingdon United, and this seals their promotion into the Senior A division, congratulations guys! From the off they looked the better side and it was a relatively routine victory at the end of the day. Sawston Rovers battled hard and did have opportunities, but the final ball was found lacking, or the impressive Huntingdon United centre-back pairing snuffed it out. The Huntingdon front three, Tommy Dear, Claxton and Wills, were strong and quick, and made life very difficult for the Sawston defence, Claxton being unlucky not to score after running tirelessly throughout. Their captain, Harrison Scaife, also caught my eye, some great passing creating many of their best chances. I wish Huntingdon United all the best in their new division next season, and hope to be able to visit their ground one day.
