With my car throwing up a few potentially very expensive issues, I was on the lookout for a cheap back-up vehicle so made my up to Wymondham for a viewing, and thought whilst there I may as well take in a game of Anglian Combination football. I had visited Wymondham Town before and enjoyed by visit, so I didn't need much convincing. Sadly, Wymondham Town are languishing at the bottom of the Anglian Combination D2 table, however, with 9 games left to go, and with the last two games yielding 4 points, could the great escape be on? I was hoping so this afternoon as they took on a tough opponent in Stalham Town, positioned 4th in the table.

I was super pleased to see a printed matchday programme being offered at Wymondham Town, Barnes Print nonetheless! Whilst free, I made a donation to the club as it felt the right thing to do.

It was a warmish afternoon with sporadic sunny patches, but was dominated by some strong winds whipping across the pitch, that was in desperate need of a cut. Before long, the teams were lining up against each other, Wymondham Town in red and black stripes, with Stalham Town in a blue kit.

KEY MOMENTS

WT = Wymondham Town

ST = Stalham Town

17' - WT - The Stalham keeper comes a long way out of his box, close to the side-line, he is put under pressure from the Wymondham 9 and his clearance is mis-hit and drops to the No.8, with the keeper way off his line he goes for goal from 30yrds out, but slices his effort cruely wide, real shame as if it had been on-target it was a sure-fire goal!

21' - ST - The Stalham 9, Lawrenec Cheese, picks up a loose ball on the left flank, he takes the ball to the edge of the box and squares it into the No.7, he tees up his shot but blazes it wildly over.

43' - WT - From a long throw-in taken by the Wymondham 5 I believe, the low trajectory ball drops to the Wymondham 8, he hits the ball on the bounce but his clean effort is blocked by a Stalham defender.

46' - ST - GOAL (0-1) - A cross into the box, right into the danger area, the Wymondham keeper Stoker comes out to punch it clear but gets a weak connection on it, the ball flying straight at Cheese who accepts the invitation and nods the ball into the net, and the visitors break the deadline straight after the re-start.

71' - ST - SIN BIN - Very confusing scenes, not sure what triggered everything but the Stalham keeper receives a yellow presumably for dissent, and spends 10 minutes on the sidelines, one of the outfield players stepping in between the posts.

76' - ST - Despite being temporarily down to 10-men, Stalham fashion the next decent chance. From a corner Cheese gets on the end of it, his header directed towards the grounds forcing the keeper to make a save with his outstretched boot.

78' - WT - The makeshift Stalham keeper spills the ball inside the box, it rolls to the Wymondham 8 whose drilled effort is blocked, it then spins to the Wymondham captain Gardner and his low daisy cutter of a strike scoots narrowly wide of the post, Wymondham with another golden opportunity to score not taken.

88' - WT - A Wymondham free-kick is pumped into the box, it is nodded down into the path of the No.8, he takes a touch to open the angle to shoot but puts too much on it, his effort flying wildly over the bar.

93' - WT - A big moment in stoppage time, Stalham with a free-kick but they make a hash of it, the Wymondham attacker Stevens applying pressure is able to steal the ball, he then runs the length of the pitch, evading several challenges, before entering the box, as he is about to pull the trigger a challenge comes in and he goes down, decent shout for a penalty, but the referee was closer than me and waved play-on.

Despite Wymondham Town being bottom of the league they competed really well this afternoon and arguably crafted the better goal-scoring opportunities. They worked tirelessly, especially in the midfield, and certainly deserved at least a point for their efforts. The condition of the pitch dominated play, it was incredibly bobbly so playing on the floor was almost impossible, the game become one of a long string of long-balls, which made it a different sort of game than I'm used to so was entertaining from that aspect. Ironically I think the pitch hampered Wymondham more, they seem to have some keen and skilful runners in attack through the 8,9,10 and 11, who would have appreciated a flatter playing surface. It is a big ask, and will require an incredible run, but I hope Wymondham can mount a late escape, I think there is enough there if they can get better at taking their chances. Looking at Stalham, they did look like a better footballing side but got more frustrated as the game went on, struggling with the high winds coupled with the necessity for a long-ball game, Cheese ultimately providing the difference. I notice Wymondham Town have some Tuesday night fixtures coming up in the near-future, I hope I can make one or two of them, until then I wish Wymondham Town all the best.
