Final Score: Thetford Town 6-4 Great Yarmouth Town
Following Saturday’s disappointing defeat, Thetford Town quickly had an opportunity to make amends as they host a resurgent Great Yarmouth Town, who have impressively strung together a run of 4 games without a defeat since their 6-2 drubbing at Walsham-le-Willows. Thetford Town would certainly have to return to the performance levels shown in the Stowmarket Town game if they were to beat Great Yarmouth Town, having not done so since their promotion in 2024. Games between these two clubs are always hard fought and close, and with the Amber Wave visiting, the atmosphere was set to be a notch higher, one of the best fixtures of the season for me.
It was a pleasant calm, cool evening and the pitch looked in fine shape indeed, perfect conditions. Before long the teams were out, Thetford Town in their claret & blue kits with Great Yarmouth Town in their home amber and black kits.
Worth noting that CUFCARMY1912 captured the goals and key footage, check out his video below:
KEY MOMENTS
TT = Thetford Town
GYT = Great Yarmouth Town
7' - GYT - Spooner intercepts a loose back-pass, he is through on goal and it looks to be a sure-fire opener, but he drags his effort wide of the left post, big early let off for Thetford.
9' - GYT - Perry is onto another loose ball at the back like a flash, and charges down the left, Thetford captain Sam Bond does well to win the ball but is in an awkward position to clear so squares the ball for someone else to clear, but Jackson intercepts and drives in an effort from close range, but Sutton was out fast and made himself wide to block the effort, Thetford living dangerously at the back!
17' - TT - Buttle with a superb run down the right, he gets to the byline and sends in a cross with his right boot, it looks like it is dropping in under the crossbar forcing Ling to tip the ball over for a corner.
19' - GYT - GOAL (0-1) - More errors at the back, captain Ingram is able to slip Jackson in on the right side of the box, Bond does brilliantly well to not only prevent the shot but win the ball, but the clearance only goes as far as Ingram and from the edge of the box he calmly powers the ball into net and Thetford are made to pay dearly for their defensive lapses.
35' - TT - Since the goal Thetford are on top but struggling to carve out any chances until Buttle goes on a mazey run down the left, before cutting across the edge of the box and powering in a rare right-footed strike, it is hit with some verve and looks to be heading into the top right corner, but Ling is equal to it to make the save.
41' - TT - From a corner King is probing around the right side of the box, unable to find space he lays the ball back to Wells who immediately crosses the ball into the danger area, it is headed clear but only as far as Diggens who from just inside the box tries an audacious volley that skids just wide.
43' - TT - GOAL (1-1) - Thetford get their deserved equaliser, courtesy of a set piece. From 30-yards and from a central position, King steps up, it looks like he was going to send the ball into the left-side of the box where the players were congregated, but instead he blazes in an effort to the other side and the ball zips into the bottom right corner of the goal, just out of reach of the diving Ling, brilliant hit from Thetford's midfield maestro!
45'+2' - TT - Ward in an advanced position down the right flank attempts a cross, it is mis-hit but floating in under the bar, forcing Ling to tip it over in a less than convincing manner.
50' - GYT - GOAL (1-2) - Shortly after the break Great Yarmouth restore their lead, a long ball is not cleared and Reegan Perry runs onto it in a dangerous position he cuts inside from the left and seeing Sutton off his line, he curls the ball into the far-side of the net, a composed and precise finish indeed.
54' - GYT - Yarmouth nearly storm to a 2-goal lead, Spooner is through on goal from the right flank and seeing Sutton charging out he elects to square to Jackson who fires in from close range, but the linesmans flag goes up immediately. I was in the completely wrong angle to see that one clearly, but it did look close, huge moment.
56' - TT - GOAL (2-2) - Thetford reply to the disallowed goal with an equaliser, Buttle with some great skill on the left, he plays the ball into Bond who flicks it onto King, he is through and skips as close to Ling as he can, and with the keeper in no mans land not knowing if a strike or squared ball will come in, King slips the ball under him in a manner that only he can, classic Kingy goal, sublime!
60' - TT - GOAL (3-2) - With the wind knocked out of Great Yarmouth's sails, Thetford press to take the lead for the first time. Diggens steals the ball in the middle of the field and gives it straight to King, he darts forwards and having drawn in the defenders he shuffles the ball back out to Diggens on the left who takes the ball just inside the box before arrowing in an effort beyond Ling, crashing into the inside of the left post and in. Worryingly, just as King released the ball he is clattered and is immediately replaced by Theo Piggott.
65' - TT - GOAL (4-2) - Thetford go ahead and cement their lead with a goal of the season contender from Grove, he intercepts a ball inside his own half, sprints forwards with lightning speed, avoiding challenges, before reaching the edge of the opposition box where he lets rip, hammering the ball into the top right corner, top bins, plenty of swazz on that strike, giving Ling no chance. Simply outrageous goal, take a bow Dylan!
69' - GYT - GOAL (4-3) - Great Yarmouth don't when they are defeated and peg one back in quick fashion, Perry breaks down the left chasing a ball over the top, Cooper challenges but goes down, Sutton tries to cover off the shot and gets something on, but Perry gets the ball back and decisively sweeps the ball across him and into the far side of the goal, game on!
75' - TT - Wells with one of his now trademark runs from deep, he goes from one box to the other, he tries to shoot but the space is blocked off so he slides the ball out to Piggott on the right who squares into Harvey Lott in the middle, a powerful first time strike forces Ling to make a reaction save, Buttle is in on the follow-up but his effort is blocked by the scrambling defence and the chance goes begging.
80' - GYT - GOAL (4-4) - A silly foul from Thetford just outside the left side of the box. Buoyed by his 2 goals, Perry steps up and fires in the perfect free-kick to curl the ball into the top left corner, and the Thetford crowd are stunned as the visitors equalise.
82' - GYT - Yarmouth are on top, substitute Duffield wins the ball down the right flank, cuts along the by-line and flashes in an effort at the near-post with some pace, but Ollie Sutton manages to make the stop.
85' - TT - GOAL (5-4) - Yarmouth are all over Thetford and go all out attack to steal the win, but this allows Thetford to break quickly, a 2-on-1 sees Buttle burst forward at a rapid pace, having drawn the loan defender in he squares to Harvey Lott who smashes the ball into the net, and Thetford regain their lead, what a half of football!
88' - GYT - A speculative effort from the half-way line is launched goalwards, it is dropping into the top-left corner and tests Sutton, but he's equal to the challenge, although did make it look less than comfortable.
92' - TT - GOAL (6-4) - Thetford with a late goal to ease the nail-biting home fans, Grove with a driving run down the left, he finds Ward who looks for space to shoot but sees Piggott darting in off the right flank and slips the ball through to him, and from inside the box he absolutely leathers it into the back of the net, what a moment for the youngster and a cracking finish to boot.
WHAT. A. GAME!!!! Not even sure where to start, but I will by thanking all the players out on the field who put on a footballing spectacle like that, this is a game that will live long in the memory, particularly that 8-goal 2nd half! I'm sure both managers will be looking at their defences with some concern, but equally pleased to see the lethality of the attacks. To score 4 goals away from home and lose cannot happen all that often, and it must be even more frustrating for hat-trick man Reegan Perry to taste defeat after a superb hat-trick. Ultimately, the Thetford Town attacks and counter-attacks at pace were too devastating for Great Yarmouth to cope with, the waves of pacey players, the likes of Cameron King, Jordan Buttle, George Diggens, Dylan Grove, Harvey Lott, Theo Piggott and Kyran Cooper proved to be irresistible. It was also a fine debut for Henman-Mason who slotted well in the team and looked a great addition to the squad. A brilliant win for Thetford Town sees them keeping up the pace at the top of the table, and with the games coming thick and fast they host Dereham Town next, who themselves secured a superb win against March Town United tonight and have the leagues top scorer Louis Simmons who has already netted an incomprehensible 15 goals, we will need to keep him quiet in Saturday's Breckland Derby if we want to win that one. Looking back at today's game, if you want more of this, we have been drawn away at Great Yarmouth Town in the Norfolk Senior Cup, date still to be confirmed but will be early October, and following tonight's result I'm sure The Bloaters will be already plotting their revenge, what a fixture to look forward too! Once again, congratulations to the Thetford players and coaching team for their fine win tonight, UP THE TOWN!!!
