A big afternoon in Breckland as the districts two best side, Thetford Town and Dereham Town, go toe-to-toe in the Eastern Counties Premier Division. Whilst Thetford finished above Dereham last season, and are currently higher this season, Dereham secured a 0-0 at Mundford Road before smashing Thetford 5-1 a month later at Aldiss Park, one of the worst defeats suffered for a while. Therefore, Thetford Town would be keen to get one over their local rivals, a team with some familiar faces in Jake Mann and Jordan Lake, although expect both to get a very warm welcome. Also amongst the Dereham line-up is Louis Simmons who has netted 15 goals in all-competitions having only played 12 games, incredible stats. However, Thetford Town would be still buzzing from their incredible 6-4 win over Great Yarmouth Town, knowing that they have the firepower to score 5 goals in a half of football must give them a lot of belief and confidence. This was shaping up to be a brilliant game, and I was hoping the game lived up to the billing.

The afternoon started off feeling quite autumnal, with grey skies, blustery winds and spots of rain, but got sunnier and warmer as the day progressed. The teams lined up in front of the main stand, with Thetford Town in claret & blue, with Dereham Town in their away green kits.

KEY MOMENTS

TT = Thetford Town

DT = Dereham Town

3' - DT - Possible early penalty shout for the visitors, Fenn attacks down the left-flank and cuts into the box, a firm challenge comes in from Cooper and Fenn goes down, looked a 50/50 one to me but the referee thankfully waves play-on.

8' - TT - Grove bursts through, he slips Harvey Lott in down the left, he takes the ball in and cuts back to Diggens whose drilled effort towards the near-post is just wide.

33' - TT - Thetford captain Sam Bond is given space to roam forwards, he floats a precise over the top of the Dereham back-line and Elliot Smith is on the end of it, his diving header well stopped by Kagami, the deflection falls to Harvey Lott on the edge of the box and his powerful effort is blocked.

34' - TT - GOAL (1-0) - In the same passage of play, Thetford continue to press, Sam Bond, still in an advanced position, wins the ball back and delivers a pinpoint cross in from the right, Elliot Smith is in again and this time he guides his header beyond Kagami and into the bottom right corner, two Thetford's legends linking up wonderfully to put them 1-0 up!

45' - TT - Diggens wins a free-kick on the edge of the Dereham box and steps up to take it. His effort is blasted into the wall, but falls back to him, his effort on the half-volley struck well but deflected over for a corner.

49' - TT - GOAL (2-0) - A huge error from Dereham Town gifts Thetford Town their 2nd early in the second half. A free-kick deep in their area, on the right touchline, goes badly wrong and is delivered into the Harvey Lott in the middle, needing no invitation he bursts towards goal at pace, holds off the covering defender before slotting the ball into the net, clinical finishing to punish Dereham for that error.

53' - INCIDENT - Diggens chases down a long ball and is shoved in the back by Huckerby. Referee deems nothing was wrong, but in the aftermath Huckerby storms over to Diggens and pushes him down, with hands in or near the neck area, but despite the linesman being next to this incident, no cards are shown to the Dereham defender.

59' - TT - A booming Ollie Sutton goalkick drops to Harvey Lott, he does brilliantly well to hold up the ball and slides the charging Henman-Mason in, just as he goes to strike a defender cuts across to deflect the effort out for a corner.

75' - TT - A free-kick in the centre-circle is pumped down the left, substitute Piggott darts into the box, a challenge comes in but the ball drops to Thetford Town captain Sam Bond, with the goalmouth wide open his side-footed volley is guided just wide of the post, and the chance for another famous Bondy goal goes begging.

77' - TT - Fine work from Grove to break, he slips Piggott in down the left, he sprints to the by-line and cuts a dangerous ball across the danger area, Elliot Smith is at full sprint but is mere inches away from connecting.

91' - TT - GOAL (3-0) - Thetford Town put the chances of a late comeback to bed with a decisive 3rd. From deep in the Thetford half, substitute Piggott flicks the ball over a Dereham player and sprints onto the ball, unreal skill, he streaks forwards down the left and finds Harvey Lott who plays a ball into substitute de Noronha in the middle, he manages to get an important boot on ball to guide it into the path of Harvey Lott, he rounds the defender and now 1-on-1 he skips into the box and sweeps the ball past Kagami with precision, more decisive finishing from the young man for his second of the game.

A convincing win for Thetford Town and a huge clean sheet against the leagues most potent striker, shackled so tightly he never even had sight of goal. Following the crazy Tuesday evening result where 4-goal were conceded, it makes this all the more sweeter. Thetford were patient in this game, building from a very solid base at the back and in the middle, dominating these areas. The core of Wells, Bond, Wood, Smith and Henman-Mason gave the time and space for the wide players and attackers to sweep forwards and probe the Dereham defence with confidence, and never looked like they were rushed or panicking, with two Thetford legends creating the opening goal. Some clinical finish from Harvey sealed the game and where it could have been a tense finale the substitutes de Noronha and Blythe put in strong performances to help seal the win, with Piggott providing the spark for the 3rd, a wonderful piece of individual skill setting up the goal, with de Noronha's important touch under pressure sending Harvey through. The win is even more impressive considering the growing injury list of Jaydyn Lott, Dylan Kirk and Cameron King, with Callum Olpin unavailable too, hopefully there is enough strength and depth in the squad to keep taking the club forwards and up the table. Thetford Town are on league cup duties midweek, with a long trip up to TNL D1 North Halesworth Town, certainly a place I've never visited, so looking forward to the trip, and hopefully seeing TTFC progressing to the next round. Today's big win certainly helps make up for the 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Dereham Town last year, and keeps the pressure up in the league table, brilliant afternoon, UP THE TOWN!!!
