Whilst Thetford Town's season may be over, things are still to be settled in the Anglian Combination and its sister leagues, with some games going on into May. This evening was a great opportunity to see Thetford Rovers take on Tacolneston, not too far and towards the famous transmission mast. Thetford Rovers had worked hard to jump above Holt United, but following a tough run of three games without a win, it looks like the title has slipped out of their grasp sadly, but promotion could be secured by earning a point this evening. Tacolneston is a new ground for me, following an impressive 4 successive promotions the team was having a so-so season in the middle of the division, but with 5 games left to play they could jump a few places still. They also defeated Thetford Rovers 4-1 in the return fixture, so Rovers were in for a tough game if they wanted to secure that promotion tonight.

The sun was out, and very low making visibility tricky, but despite the clear skies it was very chilly with a cutting wind whipping in, certainly glad I chucked my big coat in the boot before I set off! The teams lined up, with the hosts in black and white stripes, and Thetford Rovers in their red shirts with black shorts.

KEY MOMENTS

TC = Tacolneston

TR = Thetford Rovers

3' - TC - The hosts with an early attack down the right, from the edge of the box the 6 finding space flashes a cross-goal strike narrowly wide.

8' - TR - Hutt takes a Thetford Rovers corner and curls it into the near-post, the ball crashing into the post and out.

14' - TR - A swift Rovers attack down the right, the ball is played across the box and on the bounce Hutt strikes the ball sweetly, it has the Tacolneston keeper firmly beaten but slams into the crossbar and bounces the wrong side of the line and out, Hutt having hit the woodwork twice in the opening quarter of an hour!

22' - TC - Butler sees Humphrey off his line and launches in an effort from 35yrds out, it is looping in but Humphrey is able to scramble back and beat the ball wide for a corner.

25' - TR - Hutt found in space on the left, from the edge of the box he drives the ball towards the bottom left corner, but the keeper gets down well to make the stop at full-stretch.

37' - TC - Tacolneston with a free-kick in a dangerous position, Butler steps up and hits a skimming ball that deflects off the wall and is heading into the right side of the goal, but Humphrey is equal to it and palms it around the post for a corner.

45'+1' - TC - PENALTY & GOAL (1-0) - A soft foul finds Tacolneston in a dangerous position, Rovers are unable to fully clear, the Tacolneston 9 picks up the ball and darts into the box, a mistimed tackle comes in from Ostrowski, the 9 hits the deck and the referee awards the penalty. Butler steps up and hits the penalty with venom, the ball smashing into the left-upright and into the net, bad time to concede for Rovers just before the break.

58' - TC - The ball is played into Butler dashing through the middle, the ball flicks up and hits his hand, the Rovers defenders protest but the referee does not blow his whistle, allowing him to power in a shot towards the bottom left corner, however, Humphrey had remained alert and got down low to fine a fine save at full-stretch, brilliant save to keep Rovers in it.

70' - TR - Rovers attack down the left-flank through Hunter, despite the attention of two defenders, his pace sees him steal half-a-yard and he powers in a fine left-footed strike from a narrow angle that whistles just over the bar, half-a-foot lower and the keeper was beaten.

79' - TR - GOAL (1-1) - A long-throw is launched into the box, I think from substitute Whitby, the ball is flicked on and drops to fellow substitute Perrin and he is able to convert from close range, drawing Rovers level, and seeing them having the point in their hands to seal promotion, what a moment for the youngster.

87' - TR - GOAL (1-2) - The equaliser sees Rovers turn the screw, and they seal promotion with a late winner. The ball is sent into a crowded box, Perrin gets his head on the end of it, his effort colliding with the bar and out, it drops to captain McGeeney and his headed effort is cleared off the line, although it did look like it may have crossed it, but nevertheless the ball is recycled and whipped in from the right by Hutt, and Twomey gets up well to hit a bullet header beyond the flailing keeper, leaving it beyond doubt.

Congratulations to Thetford Rovers on sealing promotion to the Anglian Combination Premier Division, it has been well-deserved and was secured in dramatic fashion with a late comeback, Twomey's headed winner a fine way to cap this incredible achievement. Despite a depleted squad, with notable absentees including top-scorer Husak, pacey wide men Cunningham and Candu and centre-back Sillet, Rovers never-say-die attitude saw them bag all three-points on offer, also aided by a couple of fine saves from Humphrey, the diving save in the 58th minute a huge moment. It is great to see the hard work of the chairman, manager, coaching staff, players and volunteers all paying off, they have been knocking on the door for a while, and it is something that the town of Thetford should be celebrating. The only bit of bad news was Holt United winning to seal the title, but this does not detract from what this team has achieved. I for one cannot wait to see Thetford Rovers competing in the Premier Division next season, UP THE ROVERS!!!
